L. Lloys Frates is a Principal at the Renewable Resources Group (RRG), a Los Angeles-based company that acquires and develops assets in the renewable energy,alternative fuels, and sustainable water sectors. Prior to joining RRG, she was a postdoctoral fellow and taught women’s studies, international development studies, and history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Cornell University. Lloys began her career in South Africa working on development projects for a local NGO and as a researcher for a human- and labor-rights law firm.

Lloys has worked on numerous political and social justice campaigns in the U.S., Mozambique, and South Africa. She was a leader in the union recognition campaign for student employees of the University of California system as an executive board member, negotiator, and steward for SAGE/UAW (now UAW Local 2865). She co-founded and serves on the executive board of EndOil and is an executive board member of the Lusophone African Studies Organization.


Lloys earned a Ph.D. in history and an M.A. in African studies from UCLA and a B.A. in history and international affairs from Sweet Briar College.


Lloys has served on the LALCV board since 2006 and chairs the board development committee.
