Maro Kakoussian (she/her) – President

Maro Kakoussian is a climate and environmental health advocate working at the intersection of public health, environmental justice, and community power building to drive policy change. She serves as Director of Climate and Health Programs at Physicians for Social Responsibility – Los Angeles, where she leads local and statewide campaign strategies to address health harms across the fossil fuel and petrochemical lifecycle and advance community driven policy solutions.
Maro has helped lead and win major policy campaigns, including the passage of Los Angeles City and County oil phaseout ordinances, California’s SB 1137 establishing 3,200-foot health and safety setbacks between oil wells and sensitive sites, and the creation of the Climate Emergency Mobilization Office in Los Angeles.
Her organizing foundation was shaped through the Sierra Club and the Sierra Student Coalition, where she advanced the election of environmental champions through San Gorgonio’s Political Endorsement Committee and organized as a volunteer with the My Generation Campaign. She later served as Vice President of Legislation for the Democrats of Pasadena Foothills and as a Delegate-Elect for Assembly District 41 with the California Democratic Party from 2019 to 2021.
She is honored to bring her experience in environmental health and justice, community power building, and political strategy to her service as Board President. She holds a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from University of California, Riverside
Maro became President in January 2026.
