Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters Endorses George Gascon for

Los Angeles County District Attorney

(Los Angeles, CA) – The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV), the only environmental political action committee in Los Angeles County, announced its endorsement of George Gascon for Los Angeles County District Attorney.

“We are excited to endorse George Gascon for LA County District Attorney. Not only is he a proven leader in the criminal justice reform movement, but he has a proven record of holding both individuals and corporations accountable for actions they take that harm our environment,” said Michael Kadish, LALCV President.

Gascon, a Cuban émigré, moved to Los Angeles with his family as a boy. Gascón started his career with the Los Angeles Police Department, rising to Assistant Chief of Police. Gascón then served as chief of the Mesa, AZ police department and then San Francisco Chief of Police.

In 2011, in his last act as Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom appointed Gascón as San Francisco District Attorney, filling the seat vacated by Kamala Harris. As San Francisco’s DA he cracked down on corporate polluters, such as large corporations and oil companies, as well as individual polluters charged with improper disposal of hazardous waste.

“We believe Los Angeles County is ready to move toward a more aggressive pursuit of the polluters that are making our County less healthy and less livable. As we face daunting environmental challenges and the growing impacts of climate change, we believe he is the right person at the right time for Los Angeles County,” LALCV’s Kadish added.

Gascon is also known for his work to divert more young adults up to age 25 away from prison, automatically expunging past marijuana convictions and lowering incarceration rates. He is opposed to the death penalty and sentencing juveniles to life in prison as adults.
