LOS ANGELES COUNTY (October 9, 2024) – The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) – which has supported pro-environment local candidates throughout Los Angeles County for more than four decades – today announced its endorsement of Ellis Raskin, Natalya Zernitskaya, Dan Hall and Barry Snell for Santa Monica City Council in the

upcoming November 5th, 2024 election.

With significant budget cuts to Santa Monica’s sustainability and mobility programs over the last few years, the incoming Council faces major challenges to maintaining progress on environmental initiatives and meeting the ambitious, yet critical goals of carbon neutrality, 100% water self-sufficiency and the Sustainable City Plan.

“LALCV’s slate of endorsed candidates are best suited to get the Council back on track with its sustainability goals and find innovative ways to secure the resources necessary to carry on this important work,” said Kirsten James, LALCV Endorsement Committee Chair.

About the candidates:

Ellis Raskin

Among several environmental priorities, Ellis plans to help Santa Monica in preparing for the long-term effects of the climate crisis, closing the Santa Monica Airport and making streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.  For more information, visit https://ellisforcitycouncil.org/

“It is an honor to receive LALCV’s endorsement,” commented Ellis Raskin. “Santa Monica needs environmental leaders who will be prepared to address the climate crisis, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to lead our city toward a greener future.”

“As an environmental attorney by profession and outgoing Chair of the Planning Commission, Ellis Raskin intimately understands the sustainability issues Santa Monica faces and the paths towards solutions,” said Kirsten James.

Natalya Zernitskaya

If elected, Natalya plans to support smart water use and conservation efforts, help reduce the City’s carbon footprint, and prioritize environmental justice, among several environmental priorities. For more information, visit  https://www.natalyaforcitycouncil.com/

“Sadly, the current City Council majority has turned back the clock on sustainability,” said Natalya Zernitskaya.   “As a Council member, I will be committed to making Santa Monica once again a model of forward thinking environmental practices for other cities to follow.”

“The environment and environmental justice are cornerstones of Natalya Zernitskaya’s platform,” said Kirsten James. “In her public service, such as collaborations with Climate Action Santa Monica, she has long made the environment a priority.”

Dan Hall

If elected Dan plans to prioritize water sustainability and resilience, reducing the city’s carbon footprint and beach habitat restoration, among other initiatives.  For more information, visit https://electdanhall.com/

“I’m excited to partner with the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters to carry forward Santa Monica’s reputation as a leader in sustainability and conservation,” said Dan Hall.

“Dan Hall would help Santa Monica regain its footing as an environmental leader by prioritizing water sustainability and resilience, reducing the city’s carbon footprint and supporting beach habitat restoration among other initiatives,” said Kirsten James.

Barry Snell

If elected Barry would prioritize food waste reduction, the expansion of public transit options and the reduction of the city’s carbon footprint through unique partnerships with local businesses.  For more information, visit https://barrysnell4council.com/

“With a long history of public service in Santa Monica, Snell would bring the know-how to get the Santa Monica back on track with its sustainability agenda,” said Kirsten James.
