L.A. League of Conservation Voters endorses L.A. City Council President Nury Martinez for District 6

Nury Martinez HeadshotLOS ANGELES (February 17, 2020) – The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV) – which has supported pro-environment municipal candidates across Los Angeles County for more than three decades – announced its endorsement of Los Angeles City Councilmember Nury Martinez for re-election representing City Council District 6 in the upcoming March election.

Nury Martinez has long been a dedicated and effective environmental champion with a strong record of working for her community,” said LALCV Director Tom Eisenhauer, who led the organization’s endorsement team. “From leading the fight for the Green New Deal, to prioritizing environmental justice, to reducing air pollution and cleaning up toxic brownfield sites, Council President Martinez has proven herself an effective leader for the health, safety and quality-of-life of the people of the 6th District.”

As Council President, Chair of the Environmental, Climate Change and Environmental Justice Committee, and in her prior role as Executive Director of the non-profit Pacoima Beautiful, Martinez has prioritized environmental issues. She has her own “Green New Deal” agenda that is focused on environmental justice for low-income, people-of-color communities that historically suffer from polluted air, water and land more than other, more affluent communities. She has worked to clean up toxic brownfield sites and to launch the “Clean Up Green Up” initiative to identify land use policies that would better protect the health and well-being of residents and the local environment. On the Council, Martinez has continued leading these efforts, and she has worked to protect neighborhoods from air pollution caused by waste haulers, to reclaim and store stormwater, and to protect the critical Rory Shaw Wetlands.
