The Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters (LALCV), that supports pro-environmental candidates throughout Los Angeles County, announces its endorsement of Mayor Kevin Lainez and Vanessa Haro for the City Council in the City of Commerce.
The City of Commerce is “ground zero” for environmental health and justice issues in the LA region. At the intersection of the 710 and 5 freeways; and adjacent to a massive railyard with growing trucking, warehousing and logistics firms that serve the goods movement industry; residents are subjected to poor air quality, diesel contamination, noise, and industrial toxins. Commerce is directly adjacent to the Exide lead battery recycling disaster, as well as the recent Lineage Logistics fire that polluted East LA and the surrounding community for weeks in summer 2026. It is also home to major chemical plans (AmVac and Ashland). The City is making important strides towards energy efficiency, rooftop solar, stronger trucking regulations, and “green” building standards.
“Kevin Lainez and Vanessa Haro are focused on improving the health of Commerce residents facing the impacts of poor air quality. They are committed to emergency preparedness from industrial facility accidents, increased tree canopy and parks, and expanded affordable housing options that protect against extreme heat. We are proud to endorse them,” stated Maro Kakoussian, President, LALCV.”
Kevin Lainez, who currently serves as the Mayor of Commerce, shared, “Over the past four years, I’ve focused on developing policies and initiatives that support a cleaner and more sustainable City of Commerce. In my next term, I look forward to working with the LA League of Conservation Voters to continue delivering a healthier and safer community for our families.”
Vanessa Haro, a fourth generation family member in Commerce and a new candidate for City Council, stated, “One of my biggest priorities is creating a cleaner, greener, healthy environment for our community. I’m so thankful to the LA League of Conservation Voters for their endorsement, as I truly look forward to working together in creating a healthier and greener environment for our community.”
