This has been a remarkable and historic national election, removing one of the world’s major obstacles for meaningful climate solutions from the White House and sending in California’s own Senator Kamala Harris to serve as the first woman, first Black and first Asian Vice President! I’m so happy to report that in Los Angeles County our candidates won handily in the two biggest races; Holly Mitchell in the 2nd District for County Supervisor and George Gascon for District Attorney. Both victories offer a real possibility for substantive change in LA towards environmental justice and should bring much needed improvements in environmental policies that impact thousands of people on a daily basis. We’re thrilled that we could help Measure J pass to address the disproportionate impact of racial injustice by ensuring our values are forever reflected in the way we spend our public dollars in Los Angeles County. We’re also grateful we could support Measure US in Long Beach so that an increased tax on oil production will fund good programs and services for impacted communities.
We are proud we supported great candidates who won in local races across LA County; from Tim Sandoval’s reelection as Mayor of Pomona, to Suely Saro and Cindy Allen joining the Long Beach City Council, Cindy Montañez and Joel Fajardo on the City of San Fernando’s Council and Steve Napolitano and Richard Montgomery on the Manhattan Beach City Council. In the City of Los Angeles, we were pleased to see our endorsed candidates Nithya Raman and Mark Ridley Thomas win in the 4th and 10th Council districts respectively.
Thank you to all our LALCV supporters who donated, and of course to our own Board Members who researched candidates and issues, and conducted interviews in dozens of races across Los Angeles. Special thank you to our Endorsement Committee Chair, Kirsten James, for leading us through the entire process. All of these efforts are appreciated and made a real difference in this election cycle. One more step in the long arc towards justice!
